Pak’s rising global relevance

THE 21st century is witnessing one of the most significant geopolitical transformations since the end of cold war. The war in Ukraine, continuing instability across the ME, intensifying strategic competition between China and the US, shifting global energy markets and the rise of new trade corridors have collectively reshaped international priorities. In this evolving landscape, Pakistan is once again drawing the attention of major powers. Political, diplomatic and economic interests are increasingly converging on Islamabad — not merely because of its location but because of the strategic opportunities it offers in an increasingly interconnected world. Pakistan’s geography has always been its greatest strategic asset. Positioned at the crossroads of South Asia, Central Asia, the ME and Western China, it occupies a location that a few countries can match. Its Arabian Sea coastline, Gwadar Port, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and its potential to connect the resource-rich Central Asian republics with warm-water ports collectively give Pakistan immense geopolitical significance. Yet geography alone has never guaranteed prosperity. Strategic location becomes a lasting advantage only when supported by political stability, economic strength, effective governance and visionary diplomacy. Recent diplomatic developments indicate that Pakistan’s international relevance is expanding. Relations with the United States, though transformed after the American withdrawal from Afghanistan, are entering a more pragmatic phase. Washington increasingly recognizes Pakistan’s importance in regional stability, counterterrorism cooperation, trade, critical minerals and maintaining strategic balance in South Asia. Despite its rivalry with China, the US understands that meaningful engagement in the region cannot ignore Pakistan’s influence. China, meanwhile, continues to regard Pakistan as one of its closest strategic partners. CPEC remains the flagship project of the BRI and has signif
