Despite a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah, the killing of twenty people by Israel in Lebanon is a deeply troubling development. According to Lebanon’s state media, Israeli warplanes and drones targeted multiple locations in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley. This comes in the aftermath of a United States–Iran memorandum of understanding aimed at ending hostilities across multiple fronts. The framework explicitly envisages not only a cessation of direct U.S.–Iran confrontation but also an immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, alongside broader de-escalation measures and the reopening of key strategic routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.Yet despite this clearly defined diplomatic architecture, Israel carried out strikes in Lebanon with apparent disregard for the ceasefire environment that the agreement was intended to establish. This raises serious questions about its commitment to regional de-escalation and its willingness to respect internationally mediated frameworks. Israel has always and continues to act as a spoiler. The whole world is watching the United States and Iran engaged in talks in Switzerland with great interest. These negotiations represent a critical opportunity to move beyond crisis management toward a more durable regional settlement. The US–Iran memorandum of understanding has already generated a degree of optimism across the international community, and it is imperative that this momentum is not allowed to collapse or be shattered by continued escalation on the ground.Nothing less than a permanent and enforceable agreement is required if stability is to be achieved.
