China urges Pakistan to intensify US-Iran mediation efforts
Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.
China has urged Pakistan to intensify its mediation efforts between Iran and the United States and assist in resolving issues linked to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Chinese state media reported on Wednesday. During a call with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar yesterday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on Pakistan to play a more active diplomatic role and help “properly” address matters concerning the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, Xinhua said. He also reaffirmed Beijing’s backing for Islamabad’s mediation efforts, saying China would continue to support Pakistan and contribute to efforts aimed at easing tensions. The conversation took place ahead of US President Donald Trump’s expected visit to Beijing, where he is anticipated to hold discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the ongoing Middle East conflict and broader bilateral issues. Pakistan had previously facilitated a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran on April 8, followed by high-level negotiations in Islamabad on April 11 and 12 involving senior officials from both sides. The talks, however, concluded without a formal agreement to end the conflict. Since then, Washington and Tehran have continued exchanging proposals in an attempt to revive direct negotiations and reach common ground, while the ongoing conflict continues to disrupt global energy markets and impact daily life across the region.
