Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.
The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) has intensified its investigation into the tragic death of Ms. Fahmeeda Laghari, a 3rd year student of Muhammad Medical College, Mirpurkhas, as part of its broader inquiry into recent cases involving student suicides. In a move to expedite the process, PM&DC President Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj constituted a fact-finding committee to conduct a parallel and independent inquiry into the incident. As part of these efforts, a senior female officer was deputed to visit the bereaved family, convey condolences on behalf of the Council, and gather firsthand information about the circumstances leading to the student’s death. During the visit, the officer met family members at their residence to better understand the events surrounding the incident. Her findings have since been formally submitted and are currently under review as part of ongoing proceedings. According to the family, the deceased had been under significant stress in the days prior to her death, allegedly due to continuous harassment by certain individuals, including fellow students. They claimed that complaints were brought to the attention of the college administration but no effective action was taken. Preliminary evidence has been shared, while further clarity is expected following forensic examination of mobile data. Earlier, on April 21, 2026, the PM&DC president conducted a preliminary hearing, summoning the college administration to present its stance along with complete institutional records.
