GILGIT – The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has announced its finalized candidates for the upcoming Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections, slated to be held on June 7, 2026. The announcement was made ahead of the formal election schedule issued by the Chief Election Commissioner of Gilgit-Baltistan, Raja Shahbaz Khan. According to the finalized list, Amjad Hussain Azar will contest from GBLA-1 (Gilgit-I), while Jamil Ahmed will represent GBLA-2 (Gilgit-II) and Aftab Haider from GBLA-3 (Gilgit-III). Other key candidates include Muhammad Ali Akhter (GBLA-4, Nagar-I), Zulfiqar Ali Murad (GBLA-5, Nagar-II), and Col. Imtiaz ul Haq (R) from GBLA-6 (Hunza). The Election Commission of Gilgit Baltistan concluded scrutiny of nomination papers on April 28 while decisions on any appeals will be made by the 9th of next month, and candidates can withdraw their nominations by the 11th. The final list, along with the allocation of election symbols, will be issued on the 12th of next month. Raja Shahbaz Khan assured that all necessary arrangements have been completed to ensure that the elections are conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner. With the PPP finalizing its candidates and the election schedule in place, political activity in Gilgit-Baltistan is expected to intensify in the coming weeks.
