LAHORE – The Punjab Home Department imposed Section 144 across the province from 1st to 10th Muharram (June 17-26) to ensure peace and security during Muharram-ul-Haram, read an official notification issued on Wednesday. Under the order, seven categories of restrictions have been enforced throughout the province. The notification states that no new religious processions or gatherings will be allowed except those approved by the relevant authorities. The display of weapons and explosive materials at public places without prior permission from the competent authority has been prohibited. Authorities have also banned provocative slogans, gestures, statements and comments that may incite sectarian, religious or ethnic hatred. The order further prohibits the construction of bunkers on rooftops of houses and buildings located along procession routes. The accumulation of stones, bricks, bottles or other objects on rooftops along the routes has also been banned as a security measure. In addition, spectators will not be allowed to gather on rooftops or shopfronts situated along procession routes during Muharram processions. The Home Department has also imposed a ban on pillion riding on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. However, senior citizens, women and law enforcement personnel have been exempted from the restriction. According to the notification, all restrictions other than the ban on pillion riding will remain in force from 1st to 10th Muharram.
