Texas voters split 50-50 on stopping voter fraud vs. protecting access: Poll

Key takeaways

  • Fifty percent said election integrity is the priority, while the other half said protecting the right to vote is most important.
  • Nearly a quarter — 24 percent of survey respondents — said there s a great deal of voter fraud across the country, despite reports that say cases are rare.
  • While there is very little actual election fraud in the United States, there is a perception, especially among Republican voters, that fraud is a major problem, Jones said.

Why this matters: political developments that affect policy direction and public trust.

The Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center at Texas Southern University released findings on Tuesday showing that voters were evenly split when asked whether ensuring eligible citizens aren t denied the right to vote is more important than doing everything possible to stop voter fraud and to prevent undocumented immigrants from voting.

Fifty percent said election integrity is the priority, while the other half said protecting the right to vote is most important.

The more you prioritize election integrity, the more you restrict ballot access, and the more you expand ballot access, the more you undermine election integrity, Mark Jones, co-author of the survey, said in a statement to ABC 13.
