Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority, Punjab, has issued a flash flood alert for the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur, as heavy rainfall is expected across the region. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, heavy rain is likely in the Dera Ghazi Khan Division over the next 24 hours, raising concerns of low to moderate flooding in the hill torrents flowing through Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur districts. In response to the developing weather situation, alerts have been issued to the Commissioner of Dera Ghazi Khan along with the Deputy Commissioners of both Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur to ensure preparedness for any emergency. Officials warned that heavy rainfall could trigger sudden flooding in rivers, streams, and other water channels in Dera Ghazi Khan, increasing the risk for nearby communities. Director General PDMA Punjab, Umar Javed, directed local administrations and relevant departments to remain on high alert and ensure all emergency arrangements are in place to handle any possible flash flood situation. He said that, following instructions from Punjab’s Chief Minister, all precautionary measures should be completed immediately. He added that the situation is being monitored around the clock from the PDMA control room. The DG also instructed emergency services, including Rescue 1122, to keep personnel and machinery ready at all times, while authorities have been asked to ensure quick drainage in low-lying areas. Umar Javed urged citizens to remain cautious during severe weather, avoid standing near electricity poles or exposed wires, stay away from unsafe mud houses or damaged buildings, and limit unnecessary travel. He also advised parents to closely supervise children and keep them away from accumulated water in vulnerable low-lying areas. Punjab on Alert as Rain, Gusty Winds Expected from June 16 to 20
