PESHAWAR – Authorities in northwestern Pakistan are looking to suspend mobile services on Muharram 9 and 10 in wake of recent surge in attacks. Ahead of Ashura, KP government initiated wide-ranging security measures for Muharram, including formal request to Home Department for the partial suspension of mobile phone and internet services in sensitive areas on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. As per available information, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police completed detailed internal security assessment aimed at maintaining peace and order during religious processions and gatherings across the province. The confidential report, prepared on the directives of the Inspector General of Police, identifies eight districts as highly sensitive, Peshawar, Kohat, Hangu, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, and Kurram. These districts will remain under heightened security monitoring throughout the observance period. In addition, six other districts have been placed in the sensitive category, where enhanced security arrangements will also be implemented. Overall, more than 43,000 police personnel will be deployed across 14 districts to ensure the safety of processions and religious gatherings. The deployment will be supported by Frontier Constabulary personnel, while Pakistan Army units will remain on standby to assist civil authorities if required. As part of the security plan, aerial surveillance of procession routes will be conducted using helicopters and drones. Authorities have also approved the activation of anti-drone systems in sensitive areas to prevent any unauthorized aerial activity. Officials said the proposed communication restrictions are a precautionary measure aimed at minimizing potential security risks during the two most significant days of Muharram. Meanwhile, Regional Police Officers and District Police Officers have been directed to coordinate closely with religious scholars and mourning committees to ensure implementation of the agreed code of conduct.
