Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.

ISLAMABAD – The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has rejected social media claims suggesting a breach of its database, terming the reports false and misleading. In an official statement, the commission said its Cyber Security Operations Center conducted a prompt review of the matter and found that the sample data being circulated online does not belong to the HEC’s Degree Attestation System. HEC urged the public to avoid sharing unverified information and warned against spreading misinformation on digital platforms. It reaffirmed that its systems remain secure and fully operational. Last month, HEC revamped the Degree Attestation System (DAS) by introducing a fully online and paperless attestation mechanism to facilitate students and graduates across Pakistan. HEC Chairman Niaz Ahmed Akhtar made the announcement on social media platforms, stating: “Under the new system, applicants will no longer be required to physically visit HEC offices or submit original documents. Applications for online attestation can now be submitted 24/7 through the HEC e-Services Portal”. Where to apply online for Attestation Applications can be submitted anytime (24/7) through online portal at www.eservices.hec.gov.pk. In case of new user, you need to create an account by selecting the “Sign-up” option, while existing users can log-in using their registered credentials at www.eservices.hec.gov.pk. Applicants are then required to select the “Degree Attestation” option from the menu available on the left side of their dashboard
