Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.

More than 1,300 deaths have been recorded across Europe since June 21 as an intense heatwave continues to affect several countries, with temperatures rising above 40 degrees Celsius in many areas. The extreme weather has placed significant pressure on healthcare systems and public transport services. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the ongoing heatwave has impacted multiple European countries, leading to increased demand for hospitals, emergency responders, and rescue services. Emergency call volumes have also risen sharply during the period. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a social media statement that many homes, offices, and educational institutions across Europe were not designed to withstand such extreme temperatures, making the effects of the heatwave even more severe. France has been among the hardest-hit countries. Public Health France reported that nearly 1,000 additional deaths have occurred since Wednesday compared to expected mortality levels, with a sharp rise in deaths observed after June 24. French media also reported that 74 people have died while swimming in rivers, canals, and pools since the heatwave began on June 18, as large numbers of people sought relief from the high temperatures by entering the water. In Germany, extreme heat disrupted tram services in the eastern city of Leipzig. Authorities said high temperatures caused road asphalt to soften and damaged tram tracks and joints at several locations, forcing the suspension of tram operations until Monday morning. Health experts have advised elderly people, children, and those with chronic illnesses to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight, stay well hydrated, and follow precautionary measures to reduce the risk of heat-related illness.
