For one thing, the Season 3 premiere would have made more sense as a finale, wrapping up all the build-up and political maneuvering that comprised so much of the previous season with some actual payoff. Alas, HBO cut the season from 10 to 8 episodes, forcing changes in the writing room to alter plans accordingly.

What drove it home for me this week was Lord Corlys Velaryon’s (Steve Toussaint) reaction to the aftermath of the battle. Spoilers ahead.
