Islamabad Traffic Police Murree Road Office faces scrutiny over the use of CDA land without approval

Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.

ISLAMABAD – Islamabad Traffic Police has been carrying out strict enforcement and crackdowns across the federal capital; however its own Murree Road office itself may be operating on land belonging to Capital Development Authority without proper approval, raising questions about compliance with land-use regulations. The matter reignited concerns over land-use compliance and administrative coordination between federal institutions. According to the Capital Development Authority (CDA), the issue dates back to 20 years when it issued formal notice to Islamabad Police directing them to vacate the Murree Road premises. At that time, an alternative 4.20-acre site in Sector H-11/2 was also offered for relocation of the office. CDA said the premises were not vacated and the office continued to function from the original site. The authority further clarified that permission for use of the Murree Road land was withdrawn in 2008. Officials said that in 2016, the same 4.20-acre plot in H-11/2 was again allotted to Islamabad Traffic Police with the condition that the existing office would be shifted immediately. Despite this, the relocation reportedly did not take place. The corporation responsible for providing municipal services in Islamabad maintained that continued occupation of the Murree Road site would require formal approval through a change of land use sanctioned by the federal cabinet division, without which the arrangement cannot be considered legally valid. Meanwhile, records indicate that ICT Police also requested an alternative site near Faizabad in 2020, reflecting ongoing efforts to resolve the relocation issue. The matter was subsequently referred to the federal cabinet for a decision, though no final directive has yet been issued. The matter remains unresolved and is expected to be reviewed further at the federal level. New Islamabad CTO Kainat Azhar vows Zero-Tolerance Crackdown on Lawbreakers in capital
