The body shape is somewhat similar—a tallish four-door hatchback with hidden rear door handles that help it masquerade as a two-door coupe. But this latest CH-R is basically a shortened version of the Toyota bZ. The CH-R has a simpler lineup than the bZ, however. There's just one battery size, two trim levels, and one rather potent powertrain that drives all four wheels. Expert Tip: This same car is sold at Subaru dealers as the Uncharted, but unlike Toyota, Subaru also offers a single-motor, front-wheel-drive variant at a lower price point. We expect to see no major changes to the C-HR for the 2027 model year. The C-HR features two electric motors on the front and rear axles, granting it standard all-wheel drive. The combined output is 338 horsepower, which is an impressive figure for such a small subcompact crossover. That's 128 more horsepower than you get in the Chevrolet Bolt and 124 more than in the Nissan Leaf, both of which have single-motor drivetrains. This setup makes the C-HR very quick off the line; we enjoyed its responsive acceleration when we drove it, but it starts to run out of steam past 60 mph or so. The steering and handling don't match the speedy drivetrain, however. There's a fair amount of body roll, but the ride is comfortable, which should please most drivers. In Comparison: The C-HR's twin, the Subaru Uncharted, recorded a 4.3-second 60-mph acceleration result in our testing. Unlike the larger bZ, which offers two different battery pack options, the C-HR is only offered with one battery size. The EPA estimates the C-HR will deliver 287 miles on a charge in SE form, while the estimate for the XSE model is a bit lower, at 273 miles, due to its larger wheels. In our real-world 75-mph highway range test, the C-HR XSE achieved 230 miles. The C-HR uses an NACS (North American Charging Standard) port, allowing it to charge at Tesla Superchargers. In our fast-charging testing, the C-HR took 32 minutes to charge from 10 percent to 90 percent. It also has an 11-kW on-board AC charger. EPA estimates for the C-HR sit at 117 MPGe combined for the SE and 112 MPGe combined for the XSE. MPGe stands for miles per gallon of gas equivalent, an EPA metric that estimates PHEV and EV vehicle fuel efficiency. First Row: The C-HR's interior borrows much from the bZ, including an odd digital gauge cluster display at the base of the windshield—viewed over, rather than through, the steering wheel. The 14.0-inch central touchscreen is more conventional, and there is a smattering of physical controls. The wide center console between the front seats features two wireless smartphone charging pads and open storage underneath. The cloth seat upholstery is soft and comfortable, but the rock-hard, elbow-bruising armrests are not. Second Row: The rear doors don't open particularly wide, which may be an issue for those wrestling child seats into and out of the car. Rear legroom and foot room are limited, but the rear seats offer optional heat, and there are two USB-C ports in back. Cargo Capacity: As expected, the C-HR has a bit less cargo space than its larger bZ sibling: 25 cubic feet with the 60/40 fold-flat rear seats in their upright position. There is no frunk. The C-HR's infotainment needs are fulfilled by a 14.0-inch display that is operated by a combination of physical and touch controls. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, which plays audio through a six-speaker or optional nine-speaker JBL audio system. Two wireless smartphone chargers sit below the central screen. Like many other Toyota models, the C-HR comes standard with a suite of driver-assistance features, including pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, and automated emergency braking.
