ISLAMABAD – The federal government has approved a new motorway connecting Mansehra and Chilas, which will link directly with China. The decision was taken in a meeting of the National Highway Authority (NHA) chaired by Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan. New Motorway Route. The proposed motorway will connect Mansehra, Kaghan, Naran, Jalkand, and Chilas in two phases. The first phase will extend from Mansehra to Babusar Top, followed by an extension to Chilas in the second phase. The project will serve as a modern, safer alternative to the Karakoram Highway, reducing travel distance by approximately 120 kilometers, saving both time and fuel. Pakistan’s Longest Tunnel The motorway’s total length will be 172 kilometers and will feature a 13.5-kilometer Babusar Tunnel, set to become Pakistan’s longest tunnel. Abdul Aleem Khan said the motorway will link Western China to Karachi and Gwadar ports, providing a fast, efficient land route to the Arabian Sea and supporting sustainable development at Gwadar while boosting regional trade. The plan also includes an initial four-lane motorway, expandable to six lanes, with rest areas every 25–30 kilometers and trucking terminals on both sides for freight transport.
