Lexus leans into its adventurous side with the 2027 GX. After the long-running first-generation GX became a favorite for luxurious overlanding, Lexus introduced the current second-generation GX for 2024. Rugged yet modern and luxurious, the new GX competes against other upscale off-road SUVs such as the Land Rover Defender, Rivian R1S, and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Lexus has not announced official updates for the 2027 GX, but the SUV is expected to be largely similar to the 2026 model. There’s a chance a hybrid powertrain option will be introduced. Rugged good looks give the GX curb appeal. On the move, this burly SUV provides a mix of off-road capability and highway comfort. Its twin-turbo V-6 is strong, although fuel economy isn’t great; hopefully a GX Hybrid arrives soon. Cabin fit and finish meet Lexus’ usual standard, even if some materials feel slightly basic. The third row is quite snug and best suited for kids. The GX faces tough competition. Some rivals are better defined, delivering more luxury, better three-row capability, or greater off-road focus. Then there’s the Toyota Land Cruiser, which shares a significant amount of its design and hardware with the GX, undermining the Lexus’ premium image. Still, the GX is undeniably cool, and combines attributes that make it a capable, comfortable SUV on dirt trails and city streets. As standard, the GX is equipped with a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine that produces 349 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. It’s connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission and full-time 4WD. In MotorTrend testing, the GX posted 0–60-mph acceleration between 6.3 and 6.9 seconds depending on configuration. Fuel economy for the 2027 GX should come in at 15/21 mpg city/highway, with up to 359 miles of driving range on a full tank of gas. Lexus could introduce a hybrid version of the GX for 2027 or 2028. The powertrain would use Toyota’s i-Force Max hybrid technology, but it’s unknown what engine it would be connected to. It could simply be the Toyota Land Cruiser’s system, which is based around a turbocharged 2.4-liter I-4 engine that makes326 hp with 465 lb-ft. Or Lexus could add it to the GX’s twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6, potentially raising total output to more than 400 hp and 500 lb-ft. If Lexus is working on a new GX Hybrid, expect news to drop before the end of 2026. The 2027 GX will include a variety of driver aids and active safety features as part of the standard Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 suite. Among those are: Higher-end GX models gain low-speed automatic braking and enhanced rear cross-traffic alert with pedestrian detection to avoid parking mishaps. The GX can be had with five- or seven-passenger seating configurations, but that available third row is quite tight. Cargo Space (behind third/second/first rows) Maximum towing for the GX is 9,096 pounds, achieved by the Overtrail model. The Luxury+ model can pull only 7,601 pounds. The GX is standard equipped with a 14.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, which has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. There’s also a 12.3-inch digital gauge display. Four or six USB-C ports are distributed throughout the cabin. A 10-speaker audio system is standard, and a 21-speaker Mark Levinson premium setup is added on higher-end trims. Tech upgrades on the GX include a head-up display, digital rearview mirror, 360-degree camera, wireless charging pad, and phone-as-key functionality. Expect pricing for the 2027 Lexus GX to start at about $69,000 in the starter Premium trim. Outside, standard equipment includes 20-inch wheels, LED headlights and taillights, running boards, a sunroof, power-folding mirrors with puddle lights, roof rails, and a power-operated tailgate. The cabin has a three-row seating arrangement, leatherette upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, and a 14.0-inch infotainment touchscreen.
