He urged citizens to make, what he described as, “nationally responsible” lifestyle choices and promote the use of local products, asking “how can the nation progress if we depend on imports for everything”. Mr. Modi appealed to people to avoid non-essential purchases of gold for one year to reduce pressure on foreign exchange outflows and advised against going on foreign tours. Iran sent its response to the latest U.S. ceasefire proposal via Pakistani mediators and wants negotiations to focus on permanently ending the war, but President Donald Trump quickly rejected it as “totally unacceptable!” (written in uppercase) with no details. Iran seeks to end the war on all fronts, including in Lebanon, where Israel is fighting the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group, and to ensure the security of shipping, state TV said. Days after suffering a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly polls, a section of Trinamool Congress leaders appears to be searching for a scapegoat, with many blaming political consultancy firm I-PAC for the setback. Senior Trinamool Congress leader and Lok Sabha chief whip Kalyan Banerjee has pointed out that dependency on I-PAC had cost the party this election. “I-PAC has completely destroyed the Trinamool Congress organisation. Abhishek’s (party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee) full dependency on I-PAC has not been accepted,” Mr. Banerjee said in an interview with Anandbazar Online. The Congress on Sunday (May 10, 2026) claimed that Instagram has “blocked” Rahul Gandhi’s reel and photo post featuring him and actor-politician Vijay due to the rules of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), even as government sources denied the charge. Sources in the MeitY clarified that it had nothing to do with the action and it was because the platform’s internal system mistakenly flagged the post for blocking. The Enforcement Directorate is currently investigating alleged scams of nearly ₹4,000 crore in the education sector. The cases involve paper leaks, alleged fake admissions, scholarship frauds, fake degree rackets and recruitment scams. The agency has attached assets currently worth ₹1,500 crore and arrested several high-profile accused across States. The latest case involves entities linked to the Al-Falah Group, in which the agency recently re-arrested Group chief Jawad Ahmad Siddiqui for his alleged role in the use of forged papers to acquire land in Delhi. A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking direction to the Centre and State governments to constitute a judicial commission or an expert committee to review the wages and other benefits given to priests, sevadars and temple staff in state-controlled temples.
